Charter AmendmentEditorial There's been a lot of flap recently about Jacksonville's tree ordinance and which trees are protected. Let's play show and tell. This tree is not protected under law. Trees this big can be plowed under by developers, and in some cases don't have to be replaced at least not by the same kind of tree. And we all know a pine tree is not a live oak. Some concerned citizens are trying to fix this by getting a charter amendment on the ballot that would set minimum standards for tree protection. These standards would not be applied to individual home owners. WJXT supports this charter amendment as a way to bring the question directly to the voters. We've done it before, with term limits and billboards. If you'd like to help in the petition drive to get it on the ballot, you can call 722-TREE or e-mail to Treeamendment@hotmail.com. I'm Sherry Burns. That's our opinion. We welcome yours. |
